Opening Up a Permanent Makeup Shop in New Jersey

Are you planning to open up your own business?

I remember having to do so much research on my own so I wanted to share with you some of the steps you need to take to be operating legally after obtaining my Micropigmentation certificate from New Jersey. I hope this helps!

1️⃣ Create an LLC: creating an LLC will help you protect your personal assets. It's a good idea to keep your business and personal finances separate.
2️⃣ Apply for Tax ID: Also known as the EIN number, this is a requirement for most business entities and also needed when paying taxes, opening bank accounts, and applying for permits. If you are looking to expand your business and looking to raise funds, an accurate tax return will be beneficial as well.
3️⃣ Contact Zoning/Building Department: before signing your lease you want to check with the zoning deparmtnet if you can open your studio. Not all townships will allow PMU or tattoo studios!
4️⃣ Hire a Lawyer: after finding a studio and getting approved by the zoning department, hire a lawyer to look over your lease. The lawyer can also help negotiate your contract.
5️⃣ Contact the Health Department: your last step after getting settled in is to contact the health department! They are going to come and inspect your studio to make sure you are following the requirements.

If you have any questions, please make sure to reach out to the correct board/municipality so you can get accurate answers.
